The Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, nestled at the base of Vail, Colorado, is a hidden gem boasting a stunning display of rare and exotic alpine wildflowers and plants. As the highest botanical garden in North America, sitting at an impressive 8,250 feet above sea level, it offers a unique opportunity to explore the diverse flora of the Rocky Mountains. Kevin and I have had the pleasure of painting in the gardens for many years and have made many lifelong friends based on our endeavors.
Founded in 1985, the gardens are named after former First Lady Betty Ford and are dedicated to education, conservation, and showcasing the beauty of alpine environments. Visitors can wander through meticulously designed perennial beds, rock gardens, and cascading waterfalls, encountering a vibrant tapestry of colorful blooms and unique plant life. We were honored to paint in the gardens while Betty Ford was alive. We met her there and talked about our paintings of the gardens.
